Head of Retail Department : Giftware and Homeware
• Senior level, experienced in front-line sales and customer service
• Full-time position with one of New Zealand's most iconic retail destinations
• Working week will include at least one rostered weekend day by negotiation
This is a unique opportunity to elevate your career to the next level by joining one of New Zealand's most iconic and respected family-owned retail stores. Right now we are looking for a full-time senior level salesperson and retail department head to join our Giftware and Homeware team in our busy Invercargill store.
Here you'll be responsible for over 9000 individual product lines of quality gift and homeware representing the latest in expressive giftware style, unique pieces of home decor, and quality kitchenware and accessories from local and world-leading brands.
If you are a motivated and customer service driven salesperson, looking for the next logical step to reach the top of your game, you will already appreciate the unique opportunity that this role provides.
This is a demanding senior role that will see you overseeing the entire department, driving sales and promotional initiatives, dealing with suppliers for new products as well as providing exceptional front line customer service and staff support. Here, you’ll be responsible for maintaining our store’s reputation as one of our region’s most diverse and well-loved shopping destinations.
You will need a good understanding and appreciation of a retail environment and the importance of providing traditional, customer-focused service and quality on-trend items that have a strong appeal and sell-through.
This role will require you to:
Deal front line with customers in a busy retail-team environment
Demonstrate a strong customer service driven sales approach
Prepare and process all paperwork necessary to complete orders
Maintain on time shipment of orders based on customer expectations
Be responsible for your respective Product Group assortment range planning selections and promotional pricing.
Ensure the store selections and stock is at the optimal level to deliver the sales potential and targets for the business.
Encourage, support and inspire department staff and lead by example.
Establish and foster strong working relationships with supplier representatives
Your position will also involve regular travel to Trade Fairs and supplier locations around New Zealand.
You will need:
- Strong demonstrated experience as a retail buyer
- Outstanding and proven sales skills
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills and professionalism, to clearly communicate our requirements to suppliers
Analytical & planning skills focusing on product categories. This includes maximising sales and margin, and controlling stock in accordance with department and financial budgets.

Numeric analysis experience
Familiarity with market research, data analysis and forecasting techniques
Intermediate/Advanced Excel experience
